Transportation can be a related service when needed to benefit from special education. The evaluation should address access and safety, as well as travel to school or services in the student’s program.

Needs to discuss

The federal definition includes travel to and from school, between schools, movement in and around buildings, and specialized equipment when required. Explain mobility, communication, behavior, health needs, and assistance during travel. Students do not all require the same vehicle, equipment, or support.

From agreement to delivery

Ask that the IEP identify needed services and clarify coordination, pickup arrangements, schedules, and relevant supports. If transportation causes missed instruction or therapy, document affected dates and minutes and request correction.

If the family provides transportation

Keep communications, routes, dates, and expenses. Reimbursement is not automatic merely because the family transports the child; it depends on the service owed, agreements or authorizations, and the claim procedure. Seek written instructions before incurring expenses when possible.

The answer for your situation depends on the facts and records. An inquiry does not suspend legal deadlines or guarantee that the office will accept the case.
