How do I request therapies, and how should they appear in the IEP?

A therapy qualifies as a related service when needed for the student to benefit from special education. The decision rests on educational needs and evidence, rather than only a therapy’s name or a diagnosis.

From evaluation to service

Request evaluation of suspected areas of need in writing. Present the report to the team and discuss recommendations, goals, delivery, and frequency. A specialist’s recommendation is evidence to consider; it does not itself authorize payment or add a service to the IEP.

Avoid unclear commitments

The IEP must specify the service, start date, frequency, duration, and location. Individual or group delivery should be clarified when needed to understand the offer. A provider’s phone call does not replace a valid review or amendment when the program changes.

Ask who coordinates services, who will provide them, and how progress reports will be delivered. Keep approvals, referrals, appointments, and attendance or cancellation records. For Remedio Provisional, also review the authorization’s conditions.

If denied or delayed

Ask for the reason and prior written notice when required. Document dates and educational effects. Beginning services and remedying past failures may require separate analysis.

The answer for your situation depends on the facts and records. An inquiry does not suspend legal deadlines or guarantee that the office will accept the case.
