A service is in the IEP but has not started. What should I document?

Special education · Process and next steps

Distinguish a recommendation in an evaluation from a service incorporated into the IEP. Gather the current IEP, relevant minutes, and communications about the provider, referral, and start date.

Keep a log of scheduled, delivered, and cancelled sessions, including reasons given. Preserve follow-ups and describe observed effects on the student. Ask in writing how and when the service will be implemented.

Possible responses include steps to start services and, depending on evidence and law, educational remedies for services not delivered. Delays do not all lead to the same remedy, and compensation is not automatic. The promised service, extent of the failure, and impact matter.

The answer for your situation depends on the facts and records. An inquiry does not suspend legal deadlines or guarantee that the office will accept the case.
