Assistive technology and support from a service aide, often called a T-1 in Puerto Rico, are assessed according to functional and educational needs. A diagnosis alone does not determine equipment or support level.
Identify difficult activities: communication, mobility, access to materials, classroom participation, or personal care affecting educational access. Gather evaluations and observations about supports tried and their results.
Ask the IEP team to discuss the support's purpose, use, and effectiveness. If an assistive-technology evaluation is needed, request the referral and current requirements. Keep requests, responses, and pending appointment information.
