What should I ask about extended school year and transition?

Special education · Rights and concepts

Extended school year services are considered individually when necessary for FAPE. Diagnosis alone does not determine entitlement, and services cannot be categorically restricted to certain students. Gather information about progress, interruptions, and recovery of skills.

Transition to adult life requires individual planning, with goals and services at the applicable age. Assessments, interests, and needs matter.

Ask the IEP team to explain the evidence supporting its decision. If a different academic pathway is proposed, ask about curriculum, supports, graduation requirements, and effects on the student's goals. A pathway label does not replace individual assessment.

The answer for your situation depends on the facts and records. An inquiry does not suspend legal deadlines or guarantee that the office will accept the case.
