How should I evaluate a school proposed by the DEPR?

Special education · Rights and concepts

Start with the program the student needs. Compare the proposed placement with the IEP and evaluations rather than deciding solely by school name, distance, or reputation.

During a visit, ask how instruction, supports, therapies, and transportation would be delivered. Note the proposed class, resources, and explanations. Record specific observations and communicate differences between the offer and needs in writing.

IDEA favors education with students without disabilities to the maximum extent appropriate, with necessary supports. This requires individual analysis rather than an automatic classroom preference. A visit provides information; it does not itself establish that an offer is appropriate or inappropriate.

The answer for your situation depends on the facts and records. An inquiry does not suspend legal deadlines or guarantee that the office will accept the case.
