Stay put protects the current educational placement during certain IDEA proceedings, unless the parties agree otherwise or another applicable provision controls. Its purpose is stability during the dispute.
Identifying the protected placement may require reviewing the last agreed and implemented program, earlier decisions, and proposed changes. Not every building change is a placement change, and an informal disagreement does not automatically trigger protection.
If a change is imminent, gather IEPs, minutes, prior written notice, and orders. Seek prompt advice about the procedure and exceptions, including disciplinary situations. This information cannot determine what must remain in place in an individual case.
