Does a diagnosis automatically establish special-education eligibility?

Special education · Rights and concepts

A diagnosis may be important evidence, but it does not by itself establish IDEA eligibility. The evaluation considers whether the student meets an applicable disability category and, because of that disability, needs special education and related services.

Assessment should address suspected needs and use multiple sources. Family observations, school performance, teacher reports, and professional evaluations may each provide useful information.

In Puerto Rico, ask school personnel or the relevant Special Education Services Center about registration and evaluation. Keep request dates, consent forms, and responses. Age and school history require individual review; an age range on a website does not determine eligibility.

The answer for your situation depends on the facts and records. An inquiry does not suspend legal deadlines or guarantee that the office will accept the case.
